
Subject-Based Banding (SBB) is an educational initiative implemented in Singapore schools to increase subject selection flexibility and cater to students’ diverse learning needs and abilities. Another SBB reform is the implementation of subject-based promotion. Previously, students’ advancement to the next academic level was based on their overall performance across all subjects. However, under SBB, students are promoted based on their performance in individual subjects. This reform recognises that students may excel in some areas while needing extra help in others. Students have more opportunities to showcase their strengths and make progress in areas they are passionate about when they focus on subject-specific achievements.

Furthermore, efforts have been made to provide students with better guidance and support in their subject selections. Comprehensive counselling programmes have been implemented in schools to assist students in making informed decisions about their subject choices. Teachers are also essential in guiding students and giving them information about the requirements and expectations of various subjects so that they can make well-informed decisions.
In terms of both educational outcomes and student well-being, the SBB reforms have produced favourable results. According to research, students in SBB have higher levels of motivation, engagement and overall satisfaction with their educational experience. Students can develop a sense of ownership and personal investment in their learning thanks to SBB’s flexibility and customisation.
