We’re in for a Stamping Good Time Learning Mathematics
The Stamp Game is a popular maths material in Montessori education that is used to introduce children to the four fundamental mathematical operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. This interactive and hands-on material gives young learners a concrete understanding of mathematical concepts and lays the groundwork for more complex mathematical skills.
The Stamp Game is made up of a wooden tray with compartments for each place value (units, tens, hundreds and thousands) and wooden tiles representing numbers one to nine. In addition, small red tiles represent the zero. These tiles are used by children to perform mathematical operations.
To introduce the Stamp Game, the Montessori teacher shows how to use the tiles to represent a given number. The number 435, for example, would be represented by four hundred tiles, three ten tiles and five unit tiles. The children are then given the opportunity to practise number formation on their own.

When children begin to use the Stamp Game for mathematical operations, the true power of the game emerges. Children can combine tiles to make a number that represents the sum of two or more numbers for addition. Similarly, to subtract one number from another, they can exchange tiles. For young learners, this hands-on approach makes addition and subtraction visually clear and engaging.
The Stamp Game can also be used to teach multiplication and division. To represent the multiplication of two numbers, children can arrange tiles in rows and columns. The product can then be found by counting the tiles. They can use the tiles to divide a quantity into equal groups, demonstrating division and calculating the quotient.
The Stamp Game’s appeal stems from its ability to make abstract mathematical concepts more tangible and approachable to children. Children gain a better understanding of the fundamental principles of arithmetic by physically manipulating the tiles and seeing the concrete representations of mathematical operations.
