Taking care of your child’s teeth is as important as caring for his overall health. Did you know that dental health for a child should begin as soon as he grows his first tooth?
Poor oral care may result in cavities, diseases and infections. Daily oral hygiene practices and regular dental visits are crucial in maintaining healthy teeth so that your child can eat and talk without any issues!
Below are some tips on how to care for your child’s teeth:
- Set a timer
Make sure that your child brushes his teeth thoroughly for at least 2 minutes. Alternatively, to make it more fun, you can also play his favourite song.
- Read books or watch videos on oral hygiene together
Educational books or videos that touch on what will happen when your child doesn’t take care of his teeth can be effective in helping him maintain good oral hygiene habits.
- Watch their diet
Cavities usually result from sugary snacks or drinks. Make sure that your child doesn’t consume too much sugar. You should reward him if he maintains good oral practices, but replace these treats with healthy sugar-free snacks instead.
- Floss
Flossing is an important part of oral hygiene. It helps to remove trapped food that leads to cavities and gingivitis. Start teaching your child how to floss from young so that it will become a good habit!
- Visit the dentist at least twice a year
Dental visits are necessary even if your child doesn’t have any teeth problems at the moment. However, avoid bribing your child or using dental visits as punishment if he is afraid to go to the dentist. Instead, stay positive about the upcoming visit and emphasise the importance of oral hygiene to your child.
It is crucial to take care of our child’s teeth starting from a young age. Even as adults, we might neglect our oral hygiene. Let’s do our part to ensure that our children grow up with healthy teeth!
