Navigating Realistic Expectations: Supporting Teachers in Singapore’s Education System

Teachers in Singapore face undeniably high societal expectations, which can become unrealistic at times. Teachers are frequently burdened with the responsibility of fulfilling multiple roles and meeting a variety of demands, which can lead to burnout and impair their ability to provide effective education. To create a more sustainable and supportive environment, it is critical to recognise these challenges and reassess the expectations placed on teachers.

One unrealistic expectation placed on teachers is that they can solve all of society’s problems on their own. They are expected to address issues such as academic performance, student behaviour, mental health and even social inequalities. While teachers undoubtedly have a significant impact on the lives of their students, expecting them to deal with these complex issues alone is unrealistic.
