It provides a systematic and innovative framework for addressing complex challenges while also encouraging students’ creativity and critical thinking skills. Teachers can empower students to become active problem solvers and engage in meaningful learning experiences by incorporating design thinking into the classroom.
At its core, design thinking is a human-centred approach that focuses on understanding people’s needs and perspectives. In an educational context, this involves taking into account each student’s unique characteristics, interests and challenges. Teachers can gain insights into students’ motivations and preferences by empathising with them, which helps inform the design of more relevant and engaging learning experiences.
Empathise, define, ideate, prototype and test are the five stages of the design thinking process. Teachers encourage students to observe and interview their peers or other stakeholders during the empathise stage to gain a thorough understanding of the problem or challenge at hand. This assists students in developing empathy and perspective-taking abilities.

Students distil their observations and identify the specific problem they want to address during the define stage. As they define the problem in a clear and focused manner, students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Students brainstorm and generate a wide range of ideas and potential solutions during the ideate stage. Teachers create a safe, nonjudgmental environment that fosters creativity and divergent thinking. This stage encourages students to think outside the box and consider multiple points of view.
Creating tangible representations or prototypes of potential solutions is part of the prototyping stage. Students learn to test and refine their ideas as well as incorporate feedback and iterate on their designs. This iterative process promotes adaptability, resilience and a growth mindset.

Finally, the prototypes are evaluated, and feedback is gathered to determine their effectiveness during the testing stage. As students assess the impact and feasibility of their solutions, this stage fosters critical thinking and data analysis skills.
Teachers create opportunities for students to develop essential skills such as collaboration, creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving by incorporating design thinking into education. Students are encouraged to approach challenges with an open mind, view failure as a learning opportunity and develop a sense of agency and ownership over their learning through design thinking.
