Teachers can help students develop active listening skills by incorporating activities that emphasise this aspect. Teachers, for example, can assign roles within groups, such as “listener,” who is responsible for summarising and reflecting on the ideas of others. Teachers can also give students specific feedback on active listening and encourage them to reflect on their listening experiences in order to identify areas for improvement.
Another important aspect of collaborative teaching styles is respectful dialogue. Students learn to express themselves respectfully, to consider opposing points of view, and to engage in constructive debates. They learn to disagree respectfully, to back up their arguments with evidence, and to seek common ground.
By setting clear expectations and modelling respectful communication, teachers can help establish norms for respectful dialogue. They can create a safe and welcoming environment in which students can freely express their ideas and opinions. Teachers foster a supportive environment for collaborative learning by providing constructive feedback and guidance and facilitating discussions that encourage active participation and respectful interactions.
